What about beetroot

(scroll down for English version)

After reading my last post where I mentioned beetroot, Lawrence of Arabia commented that it is the one true superfood for athletes. I had often heard and read about the effect of beetroot that I decided to try it before last week’s race. I followed the recommendation of drinking half a liter of beetroot juice everyday in the last 5 days leading up to the race.
Studies have found that cyclists who drank half a liter of beetroot juice a few hours before their ride were able to ride up to 20% longer. Examining their muscles it was discovered that they used less oxygen during exercise which explains why they could last longer. In addition, blood flow throughout the body is enhanced. This is the reason why beetroot, independent from physical exercise, has been proven to reduce blood pressure significantly. These effects are attributed to the high nitrate content, which also act as anti-inflammatory antioxidants which let you feel the burn less than you would usually do enabling you to go harder.
So, did it help me? Well, it’s difficult to say. When you exercise and race you sometimes have good and sometimes bad days. I had a rather good day. But, more than the actual race day, I felt totally fine the day after with no muscle soreness at all. In order to develop a better feel for the significance of the beetroot effect on me in particular, I will probably start drinking it on and off for weeks. I believe that serious athletes should certainly make it part of their dietary routine. For them, a difference of 1-2% is already too significant to neglect.
….oh….very important….don’t be scared when you see your urine turning red… It’s just the color and it’s actually funny.
