اعلن بطل الدراجات الانجليزي برادلي ويغينز يوم الاثنين عن نيته للعودة الى سباقات مضمار الدراجات بعد ان يكمل موسماً اخيراً في سباقات الشوارع. وكان ويغينز قد فاز بعديد من الميداليات الاولمبية في سباقات المضمار وخاصة في المطاردة للفرق. وهناك العديد من الدراجين العالميين الذين بدأوا مسيرتهم في المضمار قبل التحول الى الشوارع منهم الألمانيان يان أولريش و إريك تسابيل.
قبل ان ينشر هذا الخبر بيومين، أي في يوم السبت، ذهبت لاول مرة الى مضمار سباق للدراجات في كولون (المانيا) حيث تابعت جزءاً من البطولة الالمانية لسباقات المضمار للشباب والشابات. والمضمار شبه مغلق فهو مغطى فوق مدرجات المشاهدين ومسار الدراجات ومفتوح في الوسط ومن الجوانب. طول المسار الخشبي ٢٥٠ مترا وهو الطول الرسمي للمسابقات الدولية. والدراجات هي كدراجات شوارع او تلك للسباق ضد الوقت إلا انها بدون فرامل ولها ترس واحد فقط مما يتطلب قوة عضلية عالية للتعجيل من الصفر الى السرعة النهائية. وبدى لي ان قيادة هذه الدراجات في المضمار أمر ممتع حيث ان سطح المسار مائل بزاوية كبيرة في جهتي الإنعطاف. فقد قرأت ان سطح المسار قد يكون مائلاً بزاوية ٤٩ درجة مما يعني ان الدراج يكون بوضع أفقي عندما تصل سرعته الى ما بين الاربعين والخمسين كم بالساعة.
وبسبب اهتمامي فبحثت في الانترنت على اي مقال يخبر فيه البعض عن خبرتهم في الركوب في مضمار كهذا للمرة الاولى فعلمت ان الشعور مخيف في البداية حيث يخشى الدراج الغير خبير من الإنزلاق على السطح المائل. وبالفعل فهذا ما راقبت حصوله عدة مرات في السباقات التي شاهدتها رغم خبرة المتسابقين ويمكنك رؤيتها في الفيديو الذي سجلته. إلا ان الخوف يبدوا انه يتلاشى بعد وقت ما.
وحاولت ان اجد في الانترنت اية معلومات عن وجود مضمار سباق مغطى في دولة عربية ولم افلح في العثور على اي شيء. المضمار الوحيد في الخليج هو من النوع المفتوح وبمسار من الاسفلت وهو مضمار زايد في الشارقة والذي يبدوا انه من نوعية جيدة حسب ما رأيته على اليوتيوب. وتقام فيه بطولات محلية وعربية. وأظن ان هناك مضمار مفتوح آخر في المغرب. وهناك مضمارات يلقى عليها هذا الاسم الا ان مواصفاتها بعيدة جداً عن اية مواصفات دولية ولا تستحق ان تسمى بالمضمار.
أظن ان الوقت قد حان لإنشاء بعض المضمارات في العديد من الدول العربية لتساعد على نشر رياضة الدراجات.
أما بالنسبة لي فإنني سأذهب يوم ما عن قريب ان شاء الله الى مضمار كولون مرة اخرى حيث لا اسكن بعيداً عنه لأجرب شعور الركوب على السطح المائل وتجربة ما اظنه قد يكون ممتعاً للغاية.
English cycling champion Bradley Wiggins announced this Monday his intention to return to the track after one more season as a road cyclist. Wiggins has won many Olympic medals in track cycling especially in the discipline of team pursuit. In fact, many world famous cyclists started their careers as track cyclists before switching to road races. Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel are just 2 examples from Germany.
Just a couple of days before this announcement, last Saturday, I went to the cycling track in Cologne (Germany) which is almost on my way from home to work, to watch the German youth championships. The track is semi-closed as it has a ceiling above the spectator seats and the track and open in the middle and on the sides. The track itself wooden and 250m long, which is the official length for international races. The bikes are very similar to road or time trial bikes except that they do not have brakes and only one gear, which requires a lot of muscle strength to accelerate from a standstill to full speed. It seemed to me that riding on such a track can be a lot of fun especially as the surface is has a steep angle at the 2 curved sides. I read that the surface can be at an angle of as much as 49 degrees which means that a cyclist riding at a speed of 40 to 50 km per hour would have to be completely horizontal.
Because of my interest, I searched on the internet for any experience report and learned that riding on a cycling track can be very frightening at first. Inexperienced cyclists fear to slip on the steep surface. Indeed, I saw this happen a couple of time in spite of the experience of the cyclists I was watching. The fear disappears after a while though.
I also searched the internet for information about any cycling tracks in any Arab country, with no success. The only track in the Gulf area I could find is an open one with Asphalt surface. That is the Zayed track in Sharja which seems to be of good quality as far as I could tell on youtube videos. Many local and regional competitions have taken place there. It also looks like there is another open one in Morocco. Most tracks, however, are far away from meeting international standards and should not even be talked in that category.
I think it’s about time that several cycling tracks get built in Arab countries to spread the word about cycling as a sport. As far as I’m concerned, I will go soon to the Cologne cycling track again to experience riding on the steep surface which I expect to be a lot of fun.
