Hannover Triathlon

I finished the season this year with the Hannover Maschsee Olympic distance triathlon (1.5/41.5/10), which was my second participation in this race 2 years in a row. My goal was only to be a bit better than last year.
As usual, my work and the related travel kept me from training consistently as there were a few times where I had to take a break of more than one day. Sometimes I had to train at night to avoid that. The race was on the 6th of September. Within my company, I had just been transferred from the Beauty to the Baby Care business unit where I am responsible for Engineering in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). As part of taking over I was scheduled to be at our factory in Warsaw then the one in the city of 6th of October near Cairo in the 2 weeks prior to the race. Work day are usually long and often followed by business dinners. Therefore, the first thing I check when making hotel reservations is the availability of a gym and then I hope that they open early enough in the morning or stay open long enough at night. Luckily, this is what I had in Warsaw and 6th of October city. My training took place between 9pm and midnight depending on how long the day was.
I like to see the positive side and the opportunities in everything. Although swimming is not usually possible in hotels (the swimming pool is rather short if one existed at all), one can compensate for that with the various machines that target specific arm muscles. What I prefer, when I find one, is the rowing machine. Such machines develop muscle fibers that are complementary to those used in swimming which helps to recruit more muscle fibers during the race. The same is the case with turbo trainers or spinning bikes on which your sitting position is slightly different than on your own bike, which helps activate different, complementary muscles. Most Gyms usually have treadmills, but what I like to do on them is interval training and running at overspeed for short periods of time which is a good neuromuscular training to teach the muscles to fire fast. I also like to vary the incline and increase it to the maximum which is usually 15%.
I drove with my wife to Hannover a day before the race were we stayed at my brother’s little hotel in the center of the city, a minute away from the pedestrian zone and not too far from the Maschsee (the race lake). Besides my brother, we met with his sons, my sister and her family, and with Abu Mohammad (Nawwaf), our friend from Kuwait who often visits us in Hannover. Race day came.
Everything went as expected and without any surprises. I put on my new sleeveless wetsuit for the first time in a race. In my last post, I wrote about the reasons I bought a sleeveless wetsuit and the race came to confirm that my arms were not as tired after the swim as they would have been in a wetsuit with sleeves. I felt less tired than last year. Taking the wetsuit off was fast too. The bike leg was good. I stayed in aero position almost for the entire distance, except for the sharp turns. Drafting was illegal, but it is very difficult to avoid it completely considering the number of racers, and I have to admit that I took advantage of that as often as possible. When I arrived at the transition zone, I opened the helmet without taking it off while running to my place. A race official stopped me telling me that this was not allowed, and he let me continue after about 15 seconds. Nothing is worth mentioning about the run. I felt at the end that I had not used up all my energy, so I ran much faster than the average in the last kilometer and finished in 2h:45m:21s, about 4 and a half minutes faster than last year.
As far as nutrition is concerned, I think it is not as important in Olympic distance races as it is in longer races such as Ironman or even half-Ironman distances. Instead of consuming sports power bars or gels, I just ate a Snickers before the swim, another one in T1 and a third one in T2. I only drank water on the bike and then Cola during the run.
I didn’t stay to watch the German triathlon league finals. Germany is one of few countries that are fortunate to be able to have such a league, due to the high interest in triathlon and the fact that many triathlon clubs exist. I hope that one day sufficient interest will exist in one or the other Arab country to start something similar.
