Rund Um Köln 2015 - Cologne Velodom

End of April, I was surprised by an email from Skoda cars congratulating me for winning a spot in the Skoda age grouper cycling team and participating at the Cologne Velodom race on the 14th of June. I had entered a lottery a couple of months earlier and had forgotten about it. I did not remember which of the 2 distances I had signed up for. There were 2 options; 67km or 125km.
Since I had decided that my next challenge would be to join a 100k run, I had almost completely stopped my bike and swim training for months to focus on running. I knew I was fit, but it is said that the muscles used in cycling are different to those used in running. I only had a few weeks left to do some cycling training, but at the same time, I didn’t want to compromise my running training. Therefore, all I did were 3 outdoor rides of which 2 were in the range of 60-65 km and one 81 km ride. I also did some sporadic short indoor sessions. Was this going to be sufficient? Was my running fitness going to transfer to cycling?
In the evening prior to race day, I went to the Skoda VIP tent, located at the start and finish line, to receive my Jersey and race number and had dinner with a few other team mates. I found out I had signed up for the longer distance; 125 km, and that the minimum average speed was 28 km/hr or else, though allowed to finish the race, one would not show up as a finisher in the official result list.
Race day came and I lined up at the starting line with my team mates. I knew I could make the distance, but I was not sure if I’d be fast enough for an official finish. There were 2 factors that would play a role. First, the number and hills and their steepness, especially since I’m not the lightest person. Second, whether I’d be able to stick with a group to take advantage of drafting saving up to 30% of my energy with the respective speed impact.
Unfortunately, both factors were not in my favor. There were several steep sections in which I kept being separated from the group only to ride on my own for a while until I caught some other group on the flat or downhill sections. This pattern kept repeating causing me to waste a lot of effort. Finally, there was no group to catch anymore and I had to get used to the idea of finishing the race on my own. Generally, I didn’t feel tired, however, my inner thigh muscles did feel like they could cramp every time I was riding up a hill. So, I reduced my speed and was sure to be out of the official time. On the last kilometers I decided to call it a day and took a short cut to the finish line. My total distance was 118 km completed in 4 and 3 quarters of an hour.
Back at the Skoda VIP tent, I had some snacks, talked to some team mates about their experiences and had a nice professional leg massage.
It was a nice experience to make and I’m considering joining next year’s race, then with appropriate training and hopefully less weight.
See also the short video I recorded while riding, although it is of poor quality. The camera kept getting loose and pointing downward due to the road bumps.
