The fastest Arab triathlete اسرع رياضي ترياثلون عربي

Who is currently the best Arab triathlete? If I take the last 2 big competitions in the Arab world, there are 2 Arabs who would clearly come first and second, Lawrence Fanous and Omar Nour. The 2 competitions are the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon and the ITU Triathlon Arabic Open in Sharm El Sheikh. Both competitions took place in March of this year and allow for a direct comparison between Lawrence and Omar. Both times, Lawrence was faster than Omar.

In Abu Dhabi, Lawrence finished 4^th overall, while Omar finished 7^th. After a 1.5k swim, 100k bike ride, and 10k run he was only 3 minutes and 32 seconds behind Lawrence. It is worth to mention that Alistair Brownlee won the race. Sharm El Sheikh followed 3 weeks later. There, Lawrence and Omar came in 1^st and 2^nd respectively.

According to the results so far it seems like the 7 years younger Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, is clearly the faster triathlete, and with that also the fastest Arab triathlete. Despite being younger, he has a longer history of racing experience. However, I don’t think things are as clear as they might seem. In his relatively short career as a triathlete, Omar’s improvement has been very steep and it is not obvious yet at which level his performance is going to stagnate. Backed by stronger sponsorship, Omar is financially probably in a better position which allows him to focus on his training, choose the best possible training environment (currently training in Boulder, Colorado) and enjoy best coaching.

Both, Lawrence and Omar are planning to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and I wish them the best of luck. If they qualify, then I’ll be more interested in the race within the race in Rio. I don’t care if Brownlee, Brownlee, or Gomez wins. I’ll enjoy their race anyhow. But, the race between Lawrence and Omar at the Olympics would be a much, much more exciting race for me and all Arabs interested in triathlon or sports in general.

On the way to the Olympics, I’ll be waiting for the next direct encounter, probably in Abu Dhabi and Sharm El Sheikh in March next year. You can bet I’ll be there to watch.

من هو اسرع رياضي ترياثلون عربي حالياً؟ اذا اخذنا اثنين من اكبر السباقات العربية الاخيرة سنجد ان هناك اثنان من العرب الذين يحتلون المركزين الاول والثاني بكل وضوح، وهم لورنس فانوس وعمر نور. السبقان المذكوران هما سباق ابو ظبي الدولي والبطولة العربية الدولية المفتوحة في شرم الشيخ. كلا السباقان كانا في شهر مارس من هذا العام واتاحا الفرصة لإجراء مقارنة مباشرة بين لورنس وعمر. في كلا المرتين خرج لورنس فائزاً.

في ابو ظبي احتل لورنس المركز الرابع بينما وصل عمر سابعاً. فبعد مسافة ١,٥ كم سباحة و ١٠٠ كم دراجة و ١٠ كم جري وصل عمر ٣ دقائق و ٣٢ ثانية وراء لورنس. والجدير بالذكر ان اليستير براونلي فاز في السباق. وبعد ٣ اسابيع في شرم الشيخ احتل لورنس المركز الاول بينما اتى عمر ثانياً.

هذه النتائج تشير الى ان لورنس الملقب بلورنس العرب والاصغر عمراً بسبع سنوات هو اسرع الإثنين، وبهذا فإنه اسرع رياضي ترياثلون عربي. وبرغم انه اصغر عمراً فإنه اكبر خبرة بما يخص المشاركة في سباقات. ولكنني لا اعتقد ان الامر بهذه السهولة والوضوح. ففي مسيرته الرياضية القصيرة نسبياً كان التحسن الذي ابداه عمر كبيراً للغاية وليس من الواضح ان هذا التحسن قد وصل الى نهايته. كما يحظى عمر برعاية ودعم اكبر وحالة مادية افضل مما يمكنه من التركيز على التمرين في افضل بيئة ممكنة (في بولدر كولورادو) تحت احسن المدربين.

لورنس وعمر ينويان التأهل الى الألعاب الأولمبية في ريو عام ٢٠١٦ واتمنى لهم بذلك حظاً سعيداً. وإذا تمكنا من التأهل سيكون اهتمامي في السباق ضمن السباق اكبر من اهتمامي في السباق نفسه. وما أعنيه هو أن السباق سيُحسم بين براونلي و براونلي و جوميز وسيكون ممتعاً. ولكن السباق بين لورنس وعمر سيكون اكثر متعة بكثير لي ولكل العرب المهتمين بالترياثلون وبالرياضة عامة.
